JIGRA(2024) - MOVIE REVIEW

Writer's picture: arun gangharun gangh

When an Indian movie tries to do it the modern way, generally tried in the West, especially in Hollywood, it is tough to digest. Here, it is done in a superlative way, with the style given its full credit. No gimmicky Hindi movie latka jhatka, but pure, unadulterated thrill.

It's a movie about an orphaned sister and younger brother who are taken care of by their elder uncle and aunt, but as second-class citizens in the family. The sister works as a staff member of the family business. The younger brother develops a good startup idea, which makes the uncle send him and the uncle's son to promote the idea in a South Asian country. They land there and their idea starts getting a good response. In that hype, they party, and the uncle's son gets caught in a drug case with the brother. But due to the money power of the uncle, his son is released, and the brother is given the death penalty. The sister commits to getting the brother out of jail, and the movie develops into a thrilling action movie.

This is an Alia movie, and when our elders say it's in his or her blood, that's true as she becomes every character she plays. In Udta Punjab, so in here too, I could not find Alia, but I saw an elder sister who is all out to protect her younger brother, whom she has taken care of since childhood. What an actress she is! Vedang Raina as her brother is also good, showing all the vulnerabilities of a younger brother who is caught in a false case. Manoj Bajwa gives a superlative, strong, supportive act as the dad of another convict on death row. The rest of the cast lends good, supportive acts. A special word to Mutthu for the super impressive ex-cop role. Vasan Bala has done a commendable job of bringing out the best of the cast and story. The local lingo used in the Hindi dialogues is also elegant, as it shows the depth of the dialogues writer and director's engrossment in the script.

The song "Tenu Sang Rakkhna" is such a heartwarming song, I can vouch that you will carry it with you for a long, long time. It's a sister and brother movie, and while watching it, I assure you that you will be reminded of your own siblings, your mom, dad, and spouse who have done whatever it takes to be with you and help you in every which way. Even if not correct, they will feel your pain and try their best to negate it. In times of need, you truly understand who is there for you. They will do just about anything, which may seem impossible, but they will try doing it because it's all about love. I have many such memories. Also, one dialogue that I recalled was when the sister says to the brother, "Tumne meri rakhi pehni hai, you are under my protection, I will let nothing happen to you." Such a powerful statement that boosts morale on any day.

A movie you must watch for the new way of telling with no routine hindi movie gimmick, solid performance from Alia and may be you get reminded of you few forgotten memories.

I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌛 AKG RATING
